Beyond preserving our own collection, the Museum of the Scroll serves synagogues, families, and communities directly. We specialize in the care of older sifrei Torah — repairing and restoring them, appraising them, and helping place scrolls that need a new home with communities that need a scroll.
Repair & Restoration
We specialize in older and historic sifrei Torah — the scrolls most synagogues are told are “beyond help.” Working with experienced soferim and conservators, we assess every scroll letter by letter and restore it according to halacha wherever it can be made kosher again.
- Full halachic inspection (bedikah) of the ksav, letter by letter
- Repair of cracked, faded, or flaking letters by a qualified sofer
- Re-stitching of seams (giddin) and repair or replacement of damaged yeriot (parchment panels)
- Treatment of brittle, water-damaged, or mold-affected parchment by trained conservators
- Repair and replacement of atzei chaim (rollers), and advice on mantles and accessories
- Honest guidance when a scroll is pasul beyond repair — and respectful options for what comes next
Appraisal & Evaluation
Whether you are insuring a scroll, donating it, settling an estate, or simply want to understand what you have, we provide careful, knowledgeable appraisal of sifrei Torah, megillot, and Tanakh manuscripts.
- Condition assessment — kosher status, age indicators, ksav (script style), and conservation needs
- Provenance & history — what can be established about where and when the scroll was written
- Valuation guidance — for insurance, donation, or estate purposes
Note: For tax-deductible donations of higher value, the IRS generally requires a qualified independent appraisal. We will tell you honestly when an outside qualified appraiser is required and can help you find one.
Finding New Homes for Sifrei Torah
A kosher Sefer Torah sitting unused in one community is a tremendous loss when another community has no scroll at all. We help match sifrei Torah that need a new home — from closing or merging congregations, estates, or families — with shuls, schools, minyanim, and new communities that need them.
- Respectful, halachically guided transfer of scrolls between communities
- Matching donors and recipients — including young or growing congregations that cannot afford a new scroll
