The Synagogue Trust
The Synagogue Trust
When a synagogue entrusts us with its Sefer Torah, that scroll — and the community and loved ones it represents — is honored here in perpetuity. Every scroll’s story is preserved for posterity, and every donor can have a share in giving it new life.
For generations, a community’s Sifrei Torah are the heart of its life — read at every simcha, held close in every sorrow. When a shul closes, merges, or retires a scroll, that Torah deserves not to be forgotten, but to be remembered, restored, and given a future. The Synagogue Trust is our promise to do exactly that.
A scroll’s future: three paths
When a synagogue donates its Sefer Torah to the Trust, the community chooses what happens next. In every case, the scroll’s story is preserved here forever.
Returns to the community
We restore the scroll and return it to the donating synagogue — kosher, cared for, and ready to be read again.
Goes to a new home
The scroll is rededicated and placed with a new community in need of a Sefer Torah — giving it a living future elsewhere.
Remains at the Museum
The scroll is preserved and displayed here as part of our collection, its history honored and shared with all who visit.
Synagogues immortalized in the Trust
Each synagogue that entrusts a scroll to us is honored here — together with the loved ones in whose memory the gift is made — and the story of their scroll is preserved for posterity.
[Synagogue Name]
The scroll’s story: [Tell this scroll’s history — when and where it was written, the community it served, the simchas and generations it witnessed, how it came to the Trust, and where it now resides. This is what is preserved for posterity.]
An Example Congregation
The scroll’s story: Written over a century ago and read faithfully across generations of simchas and solemn days, this Sefer Torah was entrusted to the Museum when its community merged. After careful restoration it now continues its life—its letters once again whole, its story preserved here for all time.
Sponsor the restoration of a scroll
Reviving a Sefer Torah is done letter by letter. You can have a share in this great mitzvah by sponsoring any part of a scroll’s restoration — in honor or in memory of someone dear. Every sponsor receives a certificate of dedication; sponsors at the Parsha level and above are inscribed on our permanent dedication board.
